Few photographers have had a greater impact on modern designers than Slim Aarons. His portraits of the American and European elite during the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s are iconic, representing a bygone era of carefree lifestyles, seemingly spent perpetually on vacation.
Aarons quickly established himself as ‘the pre-eminent chronicler of American and European society in the post-war period’, travelling between Europe and America to capture the casual glamour and style of that golden era. He frequented the playgrounds of the rich and famous, in locations like Palm Springs, French Riviera, Acapulco, Palm Beach, New York and Beverly Hills, and his impressive list of subjects included celebrities Mick Jagger, Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn and Princess Grace of Monaco. His personal charm and positive portrayals of his subjects earned him the trust of the jetsetter crowd, and almost unfettered access to their lives. ‘They would invite me to one of their parties because they knew I wouldn’t hurt them. I was one of them.’
The scenes he portrayed looked perfect, yet he never worked with a stylist or makeup artist. The nostalgia, style, and charm of his photographs continue to serve as inspiration for fashion and interior designers, creative directors and stylists, who look to his work for a glimpse into the glamour of the past.

1968: A stand-up fondue picnic for skiers at Snowmass-at-Aspen, Colorado which has more than fifty miles of trails and snowfields. The village was opened in 1967. The ski picnic was organised by Holiday magazine, with the helicopter being used to bring up hot food. The guest list included Howard Head (1914 - 1991) of the Head Ski Company, president of IBM Thomas Watson Jr. (1914 - 1993) and his wife Olive (nee Cawley, 1918 - 2004), Norwegian Olympic skier, Stein Eriksen, and American restaurateur Armando Orsini (1923 - 2011).
